D. João Principe Regente - John Prince Regent (1799-1816)
D. João nasceu em 1767. Sua mãe ascendeu ao trono de Portugal em 1777, e em 1788 o irmão mais velho de D. João morreu, pelo que ele se tornou no herdeiro da Rainha.Em 1792 assumiu as rédeas do governo como Príncipe Regente em nome de sua mãe, Rainha Maria I, que decaiu numa doença mental. Em 1799 assumiu o título de regente, que manteve até à morte de sua mãe em 1816.
Em 1807 Portugal foi invadido pelos franceses e toda a família real fugiu para o Brasil, acompanhada por uma escolta de navios britânicos. Em 1816 foi reconhecido como Rei de Portugal mas continuou a residir no Brasil, o qual como regente elevou ao estado de Reino em 1815.
D. João (John) was born in 1767. His mother ascended the throne of Portugal in 1777, and in 1788 John's elder brother died, whereby he became the heir apparent of the reigning queen.
In 1792 he assumed the reins of government as Prince Regent in name of his mother, Queen Maria I, who had declined into a mental illness. In 1799 he assumed the title of regent, which he retained until his mother's death in 1816.
In 1807, Portugal was invaded by the French, and the whole royal family fled to Brazil, accompanied by an escort of British ships. In 1816 he was recognized as king of Portugal but he continued to reside in Brazil, which he as regent had raised to the status of a kingdom in 1815.
